The Course

Many organisation have implemented Performance Measurement Systems but have not benefited from the expected improvement that performance measurement can bring. This course provides the opportunity to re-visit and overhaul the measurement systems in your department or organisation. The course provides a link between Mission and Action by working through success factors and Performance Measures. It differentiates between key performance Indicators (KPIs), performance indicators, and different types of result indicator explaining to whom and how each should be reported and used. It also focuses on how to implement a successful Performance Measurement System, including Dashboards and Scorecards. We explain and discuss a variety of proven success factors/CSFs and performance measures/KPIs (and provide lists of many others), and use Excel to develop a variety of useful reporting tools.

This is a very practical course and delegates will receive:

  • a list of performance and result indicators
  • a list of success factors
  • a methodology for developing and implementing a Performance Measurement System.
  • a practical resource kit for implementing performance measurements (questionnaires, gate lists, training agenda etc)
  • pro-formas

Delegates will also learn how to develop a wide variety of reporting tools for Dashboards and Scorecards using Excel.

The Goals

This 5 day intensive course will  help you learn how to:

  • Explain the organisational benefits of implementing and acting on an effective Performance Measurement System derived from Mission aims, success factors etc
  • Manage and implement a successful methodology for selecting, developing, documenting and deploying a suite of metrics in an organisation (including performance and results indicators)
  • Identify and address the human factors when implementing a performance measurement system
  • Design and develop Dashboards and Scorecards in Excel
  • Appraise and Explain individual proven success factors/CSFs and performance measures/KPIs

The Delegates

This seminar is aimed at all organisational disciplines such as operations, logistics, sales, contracts, finance, accounting, marketing, improvement, quality and planning/strategy. Those involved directly or indirectly in performance measurement, management, decision making or improvement will benefit from attending.

Those who attend include, for example:

  • Advisors, planners, professionals and all personnel involved in developing and implementing Performance Measures
  • Those using Excel to develop Scorecards and Dashboards (or who just want to develop their Excel reporting, charting or data manipulation/extraction skills)
  • Professionals, leaders and others responsible for goal/target setting/monitoring
  • Those responsible for implementing and acting on the performance measures, and their advisors
  • Key people with cross-functional responsibilities such as improvement/quality advisors, those receiving from/delivering to customers (both internal and external)
  • The course focuses on normal operations and the techniques presented can also be used for project management

The Process

This seminar is highly participatory and your seminar leader will present, guide and facilitate learning, using a range of methods including discussions and a variety of case studies, workshops and examples. Delegates will be expected to be Excel literate. Lap tops will be provided to allow delegates to develop Dashboard and Scorecard reporting tools. Delegates will receive a useful set of templates, performance measures and success factors as well as a resources kit for implementing a Performance Measurement System.

The Benefits

Delegates will learn:

  • The importance and benefits of using an effective Performance Measurement System
  • The differences between and importance of “key” and “non-key” metrics, performance and result indicators and when and how to use all of them
  • How to select and develop a set of performance measures tailored to their own department/organisation
  • How to implement a Performance Measurement System
  • How to develop Dashboards and Scorecards in Excel

The Results

Once delegates have attended the seminar they will be able to support/lead the organization in effective performance measurement selection, development, implementation and reporting activities.

In particular as the ideas and methods explained on the seminar are implemented, the organization can benefit from:

  • All teams in the organisation will be aligned to meeting the organisation’s Mission/stated aims
  • Reduction if not elimination of sub-optimal decision making by individual managers/team leaders that benefit one group to the detriment of the organisation as a whole
  • Top management will have up to date information on how the key metrics are performing
  • Managers at all levels will have up to date information on how their teams are performing on their key areas
  • Teams will have up to date information on how their processes are performing and so know to take action on issues as they arise, rather than waiting for month or quarter end reports, and often before they become problems
